The Vancouver Whitecaps take on Eastern Conference side Columbus Crew on Saturday, March 9th.
These two sides have met three times in the past, with Columbus holding the advantage winning two of those matches and Vancouver only winning one. The last time the Caps and Crew met, YP Lee scored a rather lucky free kick in the 74th minute to seal the victory for Vancouver, this being last season.
The Whitecaps are coming off a narrow opening day win over Toronto FC. They started out poorly and the ball movement and distribution out of the midfield was sloppy. At half time, Nigel Reo-Coker came on and made his MLS debut, this turned the whole game around for the Caps. In the 59th minute, following a beautiful build up that seemed to flash glimpses of FC Barcelona, Gershon Koffie put Vancouver ahead. The Whitecaps went on to defeat Toronto FC 1-0.
In the Crew’s last match, they defeated Chivas USA by a final score of 3-0. Columbus put three top class goals in the back of the net, all in the second half.
Whitecaps’ Keys To The Game:
– Nigel Reo-Coker; It is essential to have him on the pitch to keep the squads composure and share his experience and leadership.
– Execution; The Whitecaps must finish their golden scoring chances as they failed to do so against TFC last week.
– Centre Backs; With DeMerit out, it is likely that Brad Rusin will step in. Rusin and O’Brien must build chemistry and be as solid as they were in last weeks match.
The Whitecaps have already suffered a major loss in their backline with DeMerit rupturing his Achilles’ tendon against TFC last week. He will be out indefinitely after under going successful surgery after the game.
